Primary Purpose

Our client, a leading organization in the Financial Services sector, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to provide expert legal guidance on banking and payment services regulations.
The role ensures regulatory compliance (Belgian & EU), advises on legal risk, and supports the development of compliant products, services, contracts, and operations.
 

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory & Compliance Advisory

• Monitor and interpret Belgian & EU financial regulations
• Advise on new legislation and regulatory developments
• Assess impact on products, services, and operations

Business Legal Support

• Advise teams on legal and regulatory matters
• Identify and mitigate legal and operational risks
• Provide pragmatic, solution-oriented legal guidance

Contracts & Documentation

• Draft, review, and validate contracts and legal documents
• Ensure compliance of customer-facing materials and marketing content
• Support new product and service launches

Disputes & Complaints

• Manage customer disputes and legal claims
• Coordinate with external counsel when needed
• Support efficient resolution strategies

Stakeholder Collaboration

• Act as legal partner to business, compliance, and risk teams
• Support cross-functional projects
• Promote a strong compliance culture

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Master's Degree in Law
• 7+ years' experience in banking / financial services
• Strong expertise in banking law and payment services

Technical Skills

• Deep knowledge of Belgian & EU banking regulations
• Strong understanding of payment services frameworks
• Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills
• Strong legal risk assessment capability

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Detail-oriented and highly structured
• Strong stakeholder management
• Business-oriented and pragmatic mindset

Languages

• Native level: Dutch or French
• Good command of French and/or Dutch
• English is an asset
